Fundamental landscaping materials include bricks, concrete, wood, stone, wood chips and mulch. If you’re unsure whether the materials you or your company is using in your landscaping, it is possible to check whether the materials you’re using are destructive to the environment and whether there are environmentally friendly options.
This material is conventionally used to landscape but it’s harmful to the environment, as it contains carbon dioxide. Actually, there are eco-friendly alternatives to regular concrete in the form of reused or broken concrete pavers and recycled glass pavers.
If pouring concrete is a requirement of your project, there are more environmentally friendly options based on using renewable materials, like blast furnace slag, as a replacement for up to 70% of the cement content.
Environmentally friendly types include terracotta or adobe bricks, as neither require kilns unlike others that are manufactured in wood-fired kilns.
When stones are quarried from areas that sit beside water there can be damage to that body of water. It’s far better to look for companies that get their stone and aggregate from inland locations. Alternatively, designers can work with what’s already there, relocating stones from one part of a site to another.
Sustainability in the choice of wood used centres on where the wood comes from and how it’s been treated. Responsibly sourced timber is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), and checking for non-toxic wood treatments can reduce potential environmental pollution.
Don’t choose rubber mulch and artificially dyed mulch, as neither are eco-friendly. Instead, opt for eco-friendly types like shredded bulk, pine straw, or chopped leaves to plant in beds.

Here are some pointers to get you started:
- Reduce lawn size. Whether your designing a green space for a commercial site or redesigning a garden, reducing the amount of space given over to lawn is the quickest way to reduce water consumption.
- Mulch heavily in plant beds. Water loss can be reduced by spacing out plants and use 5-7cm of mulch between plants. This also has the added advantage of making it more difficult for weeds to grow.
Water Irrigation Systems
Smart water irrigation systems stop water being wasted. These watering systems work by transferring water around your site in a sequence of irrigation supply pipes fitted to a water source – normally via a regular outdoor tap.
Once you have the irrigation supply pipe running past the plants in need of watering, you then attach water vents to the pipe matrix which control the release of water.
Water irrigation systems include:
- Drippers. Slow release for individual plants and small areas.
- Micro jets or sprays. Jets and sprays cover small to medium-size areas of plants.
- Mini sprinklers. Good for bigger areas of plants.
- Soaker hoses. Porous pipes that release water gradually along its total length.
For automatic control of when the watering system turns on and off, we use a water timer. Timed watering systems are particularly useful for businesses or housing developments, where you may not have someone on site at all times to determine whether watering is necessary.
Another way to save water is to work a ‘rain garden’ into your landscape. These are areas that help to manage water runoff from areas of hard landscaping such as paths, or from the roofs of buildings.
Built in a low-lying area of your site, rain gardens are a useful way of managing and utilising stormwater and rainfall to naturally irrigate an attractive space and reduce flooding. It will also filter pollutants carried in stormwater.

Installing Water-Saving Features

Because the barrels have a hole in the top, the water flows in then out via the on/off spigot at the bottom. For smaller gardens the rainwater can then be used to fill watering cans. However for larger gardens and commercial landscapes, the rainwater can be used to feed a water irrigation system such as drip irrigation or soaker hoses.

When it comes to environmental landscape architecture, the last thing on your mind is outdoor lighting, particularly if you only go outdoors during the day. Unlike traditional electrically powered lighting, solar-powered lighting systems don’t use electricity, thus, they save the earth’s resources. Even better, solar power is a lot simpler to set up in your outside space than electric lights. You can wave good-bye to extension leads, electrical sockets and underground wiring. More importantly, solar power won’t break the bank, the running costs of a solar lighting system is obviously much lower than that of mains-operated systems.
One of the simplest ways of achieving green garden lawn maintenance is by planting a tree. Known as shading, trees are used to provide shade from the summer sun. The correct use of trees across a site can cut temperatures considerably through water vapour evaporation and transpiration as well as through the shade the tree provides.
The leaf canopies of deciduous tree such as oaks, maples or beech trees protect buildings and outdoor areas from the sun’s heat and glare during the hot summer months. During the winter months, after the leaves have fallen, they allow the limited winter sun to enter your property and provide some additional warmth.
However, the exact type of trees that you use should be determined by your site and budget, for example deciduous trees will require much more site maintenance in the autumn to keep the ground clear of leaves.
